The Best Magic Items Warriors of Chaos
Warhammer the Old World

Want to take your Chaos army in Warhammer The Old World to the next level? There’s nothing like going through the Magic Item list and picking out the ones that truly make your heroes… well, heroes. Here are the Magic Items that are actually worth it, and at the end, you’ll find my top 3 picks.

I hope you find this useful.

Diabolic Splendour

This Chaos Gift gives a -1 penalty to be hit in the Shooting phase. 35 points.

It works well with the Daemon Prince and any lone character, but also with those who join a unit, as the penalty also applies to the entire unit in that case. Very solid choice.

The limitation is that it only applies to infantry and cavalry, so it’s no good for your dragon/manticore or if you’re riding a chariot.

Enchanting Aura (after 1.5 nerf)

Another insanely good gift. It used to be really common on Chaos Lords riding dragons before 1.5 came out, but now you can only take it if you’re infantry or cavalry.

For 35 points, it makes all enemies strike last — not just the ones in base contact, but everyone fighting the bearer. It might seem like a small detail, but in WHTOW battles, that little edge can be what keeps your general alive.

Poisonous Slime vs. Talisman of Carrion Crow

Poisonous Slime gives you Poisoned Attacks for just 15 points — not a bad pick, it’s the cheap option. It pairs well with a Chaos hand weapon that gives Magic Attacks and Armor Piercing, so it’s a viable option for a Daemon Prince. That said, after the poisoned attacks got nerfed in 1.5, it’s not quite as strong.

But here’s the thing — the Carrion Crow Talisman gives you poisoned attacks and 5+ Regeneration for 45 points. So honestly, I’d never spend 40 points on the Crown of Everlasting Conquest just to get regen, especially with the poisoned nerf, unless my item combo hits exactly 100 points and the Crow Talisman pushes me over.

And yeah, comparisons suck, but it’s worth pointing out: other armies get much better regen options. Orcs get pants that boost armor and stack with other gear for the same 40 points as the Chaos crown, and High Elves get a 20-point seed that gives regen and can be used over and over.

Rod of the damned

A solid bound spell to guarantee an extra magic missile for 40 points. Specifically, it gives you access to The Summoning from Demonology — 2D6 Strength 4 hits. Great for clearing out support units.

While Fireball used to be cheaper and more commonly used before 1.5, this one might start showing up a lot more now (a wizzard cannot equip both at the same time).

Daemonic Plate Mail, 50 points

Daemon Princes are now considered Infantry, which means they can take this Magic Armor (only available to Infantry and Cavalry, so no slapping it on a Toughness 7 Dragon). It provides Full Plate Armour, something a Daemon Prince normally can’t get, plus +1 Toughness and +1 Initiative (useful against Elves or high-Initiative characters).

Crimson Armour of Dargan

Another viable option for the Daemon Prince, since it’s only available for Infantry and Cavalry. 40 points. It allows you to ignore the Multiple Wounds rule, meaning you’re safe from Cannons, Catapults, and similar threats.

I’m not sure if it’s better than the Daemonic Plate Mail, but both options seem strong and will depend on your opponent and playstyle.

My Top 3 Magic Items for Warriors of Chaos in Warhammer The Old World

3. Spell Familiar

For 15 points, it grants an additional Spell to your Sorcerer. In Warhammer The Old World, this is huge, as you can cast all the Spells you know unless the item’s description states otherwise.

2. Favour of the Gods – The Best 5 Points You’ll Ever Spend

Allows you to reroll one result on the Eye of the Gods table.

I take this on all my characters to reroll if I roll a 1, avoiding the dreaded Stupidity. You can take multiple copies, but remember—you can’t reroll a reroll.

1. Infernal Puppet – The Nightmare of the Magic Phase

My absolute favorite. For 50 points, it turns the enemy’s Magic Phase into pure hell.

It forces enemy Wizards to roll 3D6 for every casting attempt and discard the highest die, making Miscasts much more likely and Irresistible Force almost impossible.

But that’s not all: it also makes it much easier to Dispel their Spells, since their casting rolls will be significantly lower (assuming they even manage to cast anything at all).

The only thing you need to watch out for is not leaving the bearer stuck in combat during your opponent’s turn and making sure they’re within 15 inches of enemy wizards. Careful — the range was significantly reduced from 24” to 15” in the June 2025 FAQs, so don’t get caught out by that.

Bonus: Icon of Darkness – The Best Standard for Warriors of Chaos in Warhammer The Old World

This Magic Standard costs only 20 points and gives a -1 penalty to be hit in the Shooting phase for the unit carrying it. You can even combine it with the Chaos Gift mentioned earlier for another -1.

An absolute gem.

And that’s it—these are all the Magic Items that are actually worth considering.
