“War of Settra’s Fury” is the new October Arcane Journal and it comes with a few updates. The first one I explained in the previous post (linked at the end): new toys for the Tomb Kings.
The second is what today’s post is about: an army of humans apparently despised by other humans.
GW keeps trying to confuse us and send us all over the place: it sends us to different pages and different books to find the rules and units that make it up.
I’ll break down the Renegade Crowns in 4 minutes with everything in order.

Special Rules for the Renegade Crowns
There aren’t any.
The typical special rules that affect the whole army or let us place terrain don’t exist in this army list.
All the special rules in this army have to be paid for, and it works like this:
You can pay any of the four “Infamous Origins” for each of your characters (you can repeat them—similar to Marks of Chaos, Bretonnian Virtues, or High Elf Honours), which improve the character.
Each of the four Infamous Origins also lets you upgrade one of your units with a specific benefit.
These are the four available combinations:

Infamous Origins of the Renegade Crowns
Infamous Origin Power of Miragliano: 25 points.
He has +1 Leadership, Stubborn, and Tilean Stoicism (if he joins a unit before that unit takes its first break test of the game, the unit gains Stubborn; if he leaves, the unit loses Stubborn).
Unit upgrade unlocked: the Mercenary Hosts.
One unit of Sellsword Infantry or Veteran Sellsword Infantry for just 10 points can change its troop type to “heavy infantry” and gain the Phalanx rule (the unit will still count as being in combat formation even if it has more ranks than files; in other words, it will never be considered to be in marching column UNLESS it has fewer than 4 models per rank).
Infamous Origin Renegade Knight: 25 points.
He has +1 Weapon Skill, +1 Strength, and the rules Veteran and Noble Disdain: if mounted, he does not suffer Panic caused by any infantry.
He can also choose magic items from Bretonnia (from Arcane and FoF).
Unit upgrade unlocked: the Exiled Knights.
One unit of Freeblade Knights or Veteran Freeblade Knights for 2 points/model can gain Lance Formation and Noble Disdain (the same rule as the character).
Infamous Origin Outlaw Noble: 20 points.
He gains +1 Leadership, +1 Ballistic Skill, and the Empire rule “Hold the Line” (he and his unit automatically pass any Panic).
He can be equipped with several missile weapons (arquebus, crossbow…).
He can be an Ambusher or a Scout for 10 more points.
He can also choose magic items from the Empire (from Arcane and FoF; it can combo well with the bow).
Unit upgrade unlocked: Outlaws and Renegades.
For 1 point per model, a unit of Hireling Outriders can be Ambushers.
Infamous Origin Wandering Swordsman: 20 points.
He gains +2 Weapon Skill (you can set the prince to 8).
He can be equipped with two hand weapons, but not with any weapon with the “strikes last” rule such as a great weapon.
He gains the “Feint and Dodge” rule: I don’t have the page where the rule is explained, so I’ll edit the post when I read it and explain it.
Unit upgrade unlocked: Wandering Duelists.
For 2 points/model, a unit of Border Princes Brigands can gain +1 Weapon Skill and, once per battle, can force enemy models to re-roll successful hits in the combat phase directed against them.
Units of the Renegade Crowns. Army composition
Available Character options (50% max):
- 0–1 renegade prince per 1,000 points. 75 points, weak profile with 3 Attacks, 3 Wounds. Can only ride a horse with or without barding.
- Both he and the captain have WARBAND, Veteran, and Rallying Cry.
- Renegade captain (35 points, weak profile with 2 Attacks, 2 Wounds), can be the battle standard bearer. Can only ride a horse with or without barding.
- Exiled Wizards from the Bretonnian Exiles infamy army (as many as you want): they can be Level 1 to 3, they are very cheap (45 points for Level 1, 105 for Level 3), they have access to many lores and Magic Resistance (1). They can be mounted on a horse. They do not have access to Level 4.

Available Core options (25% minimum):
Militia and Archers of the Empire, as many as you want, exactly as they appear in FoF.
Hireling Outriders, as many as you want. They’re fast cavalry with Fire and Flee, open order, and skirmishers baseline for 11 points, but you have to pay for any equipment.
They’re highly customizable, but a few things are worth noting:
You can give them heavy armour and shield for a 4+ save.
If you give them a +1 Strength spear, you cannot give them a missile weapon.
They only have access to short-ranged missile weapons, maximum range 18″ with short bow.
1 of these units per 1,000 points can ALSO have the following special rules: vanguard, reserve move, and feigned flight (paid for, of course).
For their cost, they can work well with a 4+ save, running them as Skirmishers to score (that would be 15 points, 16 if you want to give them a short bow or spear). In any case, scoring isn’t this army’s main problem.
Sellswords, as many as you want. They’re the typical Empire infantry, but with warband and costing 4 points base, to which you add gear. What’s interesting? You can give them heavy armour, shield, and either a missile weapon or a melee weapon (like a great weapon).
So you can make crossbowmen who save on 3+ in combat (that loadout would be 9 points per model).
- Heroic cavalry for your Empire of Man armies
- Ride down your foes and run them through with lances, or hack them apart with hand weapons
- Can build a unit of 12 or two units of six, both with optional full command group

0–1 units of Veteran Sellswords per 1,000 points.
They cost 5 points base and have “Veteran” and Weapon Skill 4 unlike the previous ones. They also have access to plate armour for 4 points and the “Drilled” rule for 1 point.
This lets us create Greatswords-style (with shields) for 13 points.
The obvious combo is to add a character with the Infamous Origin Power of Miragliano so these can get the “phalanx” rule and form loooong ranks of 4 models AND PAY for the Empire Griffon Standard.
Wrong.
They cannot buy Empire magic items.
To do so, you must include a battle standard bearer (a 35-point captain) with the Infamous Origin Outlaw Noble for 20 more points, which lets him buy Empire magic items as we said above.
In turn, this lets one unit of Hireling Outriders be Ambushers if you want.
Freeblade Knights, as many as you want.
They have first charge and counter-charge for 18 points. If you want to give them a 3+ save and a weapon (lance or great weapon), they end up at 23 points.
Available Special options (33% max, not 50%, careful):
Veteran Freeblades: 4 points more than the previous, 22 base. They have +1 Strength, Veteran, and access to a 50-point magic standard and plate armour for 4 more points (they go to 31 points saving on 2+ with a lance or great weapon).
2 mortars per 1,000 points (for 90 points and with the “Levies” rule).

Available Rare options (25% max):
0–1 per 1,000 points, choosing between an Organ Gun at 125 points and a Bretonnian Bombard (basically a Great Cannon with Strength 8 for 100 points), both options with the “Levies” rule.
Border Princes Brigands, the ones from the Bretonnian Exiles: they’re Levies at 4 points that can be close order, open order, or skirmishers, but all the missile/melee gear and rules (ambushers and scouts) have to be paid for.
They can also take up to 33% in mercenaries with the Dogs of War rule from any Arcane Journal, and they will always have the mercenaries’ bad-behaviour rule.
The army feels like a basic-troop army. An Empire without a tank.
Simple.
I don’t think it adds anything to competitive play unlike what they’ve released for the Tomb Kings, but it’s nice that GW keeps releasing new stuff for Old World (even if they’re not Arcane Journals for the Legacy factions).
Anyway, there’s still the Dwarf Slayers list from War of Settra’s Fury to analyze; I’ll drop it here when I have the post.
