“War of Settra’s Fury” is the new October Arcane Journal and it comes with a bit of everything. In previous posts we’ve talked about the Tomb Kings section and the Renegade Crowns Humans.
Today I bring you the book’s biggest misfire.
Buckle up—this one’s a bumpy ride.

Special rules of the Slayer Hosts
In addition to the special rules from the Dwarfs Grand Army, the Slayer army gets 5 more rules (the last one is bad):
From the Wilds
One unit of Slayers with Unit Strength 10 or less can buy both Skirmishers and Ambushers for 1 point/model.
Look Snorri, Trolls!
After deployment but before scouting or making vanguard moves, all Slayers or Brotherhood of Grimnir units may move D3+1″ (but may not march).
Wards of Grimnir
Any of your units that include a standard bearer can buy this rule for +1 point/model; it grants a 6+ ward save against non-magical shooting (it says “during the Shooting phase,” it doesn’t specify the enemy’s, so it would also apply if the enemy stands and shoots as a charge reaction).
Troll Hunters
0–1 character per 1,000 points may gain Scout for 10 points.
Worst Among Equals
f you’ve included Ungrim Ironfist, he must be your general. If he isn’t present, it must be a Daemon Slayer or a Dragon Slayer, but in that case you cannot use “Inspiring Presence.”
Units in the Slayer Hosts: Army composition
Available character options (50% max):
- Ungrim Ironfist (not mandatory).
- 0–1 Daemon Slayer per 1,000 points.
- 0–2 Dragon Slayers per Slayers unit. One may be the battle standard bearer (+25 points) and may take any number of banner runes.
Available core options (20% minimum only):
Only Slayers. Obviously, take as many as you want.

Available special options (50%):
0–4 Doomseekers for each Daemon Slayer or Dragon Slayer.
0–1 unit of Brotherhood of Grimnir:
It looks like a unit of Giant Slayers (without being able to include Troll Slayers) but 1 point cheaper than normal (18 points instead of 19 + weapons), but but BUT… two things:
– Unlike Giant Slayers, in this unit only the champion can accept challenges.
– These are Close Order, not Open Order.
– They can include a unit champion (39 points base) who does not get +1 Attack (?!), but does have 2 Wounds, can take 1 tattoo, 50 points of weapon runes, and 50 of talismanic runes.
This champion dispels at +1 within 21″.
Keep in mind there are no Runesmiths in this army; this guy is the only one protecting us from magic besides Magic Resistance (2) and Fated dispel, so even if you feel the unit isn’t worth it because you’d rather take a Slayers unit (since it’s core and scores), it’s likely you’ll need to include him if you want any chance against movement spells, vortices, or enchantments.
I don’t think the unit is very good, so by making this troop 0–1 what they’re really limiting is the army’s ability to put one of these guys on each flank to stay within dispel range.
Available rare options (25% max):
0–1 Goblin Hewer per 1,000 points (absurdly low, I have to say it).
0–1 Dwarf Chariot per 1,000 points, which may never be the Mining Cart.
If you include Ungrim, you may also take 1 unit of Hammerers as Rare.
You can also take 20% mercenaries. In case you want to add more Doomseekers, for example xD.
It feels like they included this army out of obligation. That’s the vibe I get reading it.
Maybe the Arcane Journal was running short on content to justify the price tag.
Maybe fans had already given them too much grief and they felt forced to release the Slayers list.
I don’t know.
The thing is, the list has lots of unnecessary limitations and very little variety.
The limits definitely aren’t based on how powerful the units are or aren’t; they seem 100% aimed at how common the troops are according to the lore.
Anyway, I think they did a much better job with Khemri and the Renegade Crowns for Humans. I’ll leave those posts here so you can judge for yourself.
