THIS is how Cover Modifiers work in Warhammer Old World

What bonuses does cover give in Warhammer The Old World?

In Warhammer The Old World, cover imposes penalties on the enemy’s rolls to hit.

It does not grant armour saves like in other games. Therefore, attacks that do not require a roll to hit, such as magical projectiles, do not suffer this penalty.

There are two types of cover. Let’s break it down clearly because many people are mixing editions or don’t have it clear.

What types of cover are there in Warhammer The Old World?

Light cover is given when you do NOT fully see the enemy’s base (if you were shooting at an individual model) or the combined footprint of all the bases (if your target is a unit).

Why? Because when we talked about line of sight, we said that the game is played by checking whether you can see the enemy’s base.

In this sense, this means that if you cannot see even a small part of the enemy’s base, that enemy will have light cover.

What is light cover? What penalty does it apply to hit rolls? A -1.

Heavy Cover

The other type of cover is heavy cover, which applies a -2.

When do you count as having heavy cover?

When more than half of the target unit’s base is not visible.

Don’t let people online overcomplicate this, because this is much simpler than it seems.

Unlike other editions, I don’t remember if it was 5th edition Warhammer 40,000, two units can grant each other cover.

Take a look at the diagram I’ve included: the shooting model cannot fully see either of the two units. Therefore, when shooting at either of them, it would suffer the light cover penalty (-1 to hit).

But keep in mind that, to properly understand all this about cover, you need to understand how line of sight works in Warhammer The Old World.

Here’s the post so you don’t have to go looking for it—I hope it helps.
